How stock market holidays work
A stock market holiday is a weekday when the NYSE and Nasdaq are closed. The schedule is set by NYSE Rule 7.2, and it doesn't match the federal holiday list exactly: the stock market closes on Good Friday but stays open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day. When a holiday lands on a Saturday the market closes the Friday before, and when it lands on a Sunday the market closes the Monday after. New Year's Day is the exception, because the market won't close on the last trading day of the year: if January 1 is a Saturday, there is no closure on December 31.
The bond market follows a slightly different schedule set by SIFMA. It also closes on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, and it closes early, usually at 2:00 p.m. ET, before most holidays.
